This inn is the best experience for historic Japanese living. I would say out of my 18 days in Japan this in and it's staff was the most memorable. Set atop the stairs to a temple with historic architecture and atmosphere you get a real experience of historic Japan. The location is perfect for sightseeing along with nightlife with many things to do and see. Saving the best for last the staff was so personal and attending it was more like visiting family then staying at an inn. The owner Yoko was very personable and caring, attending to any need you might have. Meals were made in the kitchen and at times could be a setting for a king and the costs was more like a tip then a charge. I will miss staying there and spending time around the inn. I would HIGHLY recommend this above anywhere else for someone who wants to experience historic Japan.

The location and owners make this homestay special. The latter is at the foot of a historic and important Buddhist shrine and resting place of Kato Kiyomasa, builder of the Kumamoto Castle, while the former are generations-old family of soba makers. While breakfast didn't come with soba, it was one of the best I've eaten in Japan. The space is comfortable, traditional and has everything you may need, including excellent views of the city.
