I think this is the best stay I've had in all my years of traveling. Giuseppe was incredibly kind and accommodating. He picked us up from the bus station and shared fascinating insights about Matera. As a geologist, his knowledge of the city went beyond what you'd get from a typical tour guide. Despite us only staying one night, he even offered to drive us back to the bus terminal, truly above and beyond. The property itself is stunning and perfectly located right in the heart of the Sassi. The lobby is especially impressive, Giuseppe told us the story behind the thoughtful architectural design, and we were amazed to hear it was even used by Daniel Craig and the James Bond team during filming! Our room was perfect for four people, spacious, comfortable, beautifully designed, and the bathroom featured some very cool hardware. This is hands down the perfect place to stay if you're visiting Matera!

We enjoyed Matera so much. Really something to see. Our host gave us a wonderful history of Matera and a tour of the reception area, which was originally two cave houses and contains the original water collection system from the past. He also gave us pointers on what to see and where to go. The room was large and comfortable and on a great street in the middle of the Sassi. We spent two nights and were very comfortable, had lots of towels, water, coffee, etc. Great stay!

It is near to everywhere and was surprise when they show us a tour about the lounge and about how its existed years ago and about the ancient well existing within the area. The room is clean and new with full of facility and nice outdoor area.

Piano Piano is in a great location at the edge of the Stassi (old city). There are two rooms - do be prepared for lots of steps. The rooms are recently redone in a great style & are very comfortable and uniquely laid out within original small Matera homes. There are a few cafes a bit away for breakfast. Once found, the hotel is within an easy walk to all the main sights. DO plan on lots of walking. I believe you can book a taxi/Uber to/ from the address. We walked - take as little luggage as possible. The owners are wonderful and very helpful with local hints and stories!!! And they have a restored cistern just below the rooms as their “front” desk.
